Canelo Alvarez doesn’t impress says Nacho Beristain

by Sean Jones: Legendary coach Nacho Berstein says he was not impressed with what he saw of Canelo Alvarez in his fights, nor does he consider him the greatest Mexican fighter ever.

Like many people, Berstein was unmoved by the opposition Canelo faced (57-1-2, 39 KO). He has never participated in any fights that are seen as a 50-50 match or even a 60-40.

Canelo fights men who have no chance of hitting him, and the reason for this is his choice of a weaker resistance. Yes, they were heroes, but only in name.

Berstein does not see Canelo deviating from his performance and chooses a good opposition to face.

Quality men like David Benavidez, David Morrell Jr., Demetrius Andrade, Artur Petterbiev, and Germal Charlo will allow Canelo to impress his fans.

However, he wouldn’t fight them, or at least he didn’t fight them yet. I don’t know what Canelo is waiting for because he should have been fighting them already.

Berstein: Canelo lacks a specific fight for his career

“I know he is a great fighter and an athlete because he trains well and is his coach [Eddy Reynoso] Legendary trainer Nacho Berstein told Fight Hub TV in giving his thoughts on Canelo Alvarez not being one of the greatest fighters in Mexican boxing.

“Because the backbone of Mexican boxing comes from Mexican boxers, and he’s on his way to that select group of fighters. It doesn’t matter that he wins the titles he wins and the money he earns.

“I realize he’s a great fighter, but There is still more that needs to be done To be in the hearts of Mexican boxing fans. The thing missing is a fight or two like the kind that Julio Cesar Chavez and others had.

“He fights, he keeps fighting, but for me personally as a coach for many fighters, it just doesn’t satisfy me. He didn’t fight a battle that really captured people’s hearts.

“He’s fighting, winning and winning millions of dollars, which is good; I’m glad he’s had success, but he hasn’t taken that fight we all want to see,” Berstein said.

There weren’t any fights from Canelo where he captured people’s hearts, the reason being that he failed to fight an opponent he needed to impress the crowd.

These are the fights Canelo needs to capture the hearts and minds of fans:

  • David Benavides
  • David Morrell Jr.
  • Gennady Golovkin 3
  • Jermal Charlotte
  • Demetrius Andrade
  • Joe Smith Jr.
  • Dmitriy Bevol
  • Artur Petbiev
  • Lawrence neighborhood
  • Myris Predis

If these are the only fighters Canelo fought for the remainder of his career, it will shape his legacy in a way that goes well beyond what he did recently when he became the undisputed champion at the age of 168.

Canelo beat a group of paper champions from England and an American at Plant, who fell after hitting what appeared to be a poor shot.

Canelo’s most challenging fights were against Gennady Golovkin, Irislandi Lara, Austin Trout and Floyd Mayweather.

Since many boxing fans think Canelo is worth the losses in all five of those fights, you can’t describe it as defining your career.

At this point, I don’t think we’ll see Canelo fight a career-defining battle as he only faces his opponents.

Five Canelo battles leave a lot of doubt

“When I was in Las Vegas, I went to the hotel because they kicked us out,” Berstein continued. “I’ve had three calls from people who say they’re bad coaches** who told me, ‘I’m watching this farce from a fight with Canelo. [Caleb] The plant fell without being severely injured.

“I didn’t see that [Canelo vs. Plant]. I can’t give my opinion, but these people told me the plant threw it out. This makes like Five battles [of Canelo] This leaves a lot of doubt,Berstein said without naming the four other questionable battles Canelo fought that were questionable.

“Because they can cheat you and the fans but not me because I spent so much time watching boxing,” Berstein said.

Berstein did not say what five battles Canelo had that left much in doubt, but he could think of these:

  • Gennady Golovkin 1 and 2
  • Austin Trout
  • Irisland Lara
  • Sergey Kovalev

Although Canelo stopped Kovalev in their fight in 2019, the way the Russian fighter fought was odd, as if he wasn’t putting in too much effort.

Fans who watched Kovalev fight in the past were shocked by the way Canelo fought. He didn’t hold his punches and basically stabbed him and moved around the ring against the younger Canelo. He seemed to be walking on Canelo.

This is one reason why you should worry a little about Canelo’s next fight if he chooses to take on the next WBC Cruiserweight Champion Ilunga Makabu.

He and Canelo seemed very friendly with each other during the WBC conference and seemed similar to how Saul and Kovalev treated when they interacted before their fight.

Will Makabu take things easy with Canelo because of his gratitude for the fight? You have heard the saying, “Do not bite the hand that feeds.”

When a Canelo is hand-picked for you for a whopping multimillion-dollar wages that will set you up for life, it must be hard to want to punch the Mexican superstar with any hard punches. You will be very grateful that he gave you the fight.

This writer agreed that Caleb Plant looked like he fell uninjured badly by Canelo in their fight last November. The plant looked like it had fallen from a lightning strike and then finished.

“Alvarez doesn’t go any further,” says Berstein.

“I respect my opinion [Juan Manuel] Marquez, but I think very soon he will give us that fight we all want and enter a selection of the greatest fighters,” Berstein said in response to Marquez saying Canelo would never be the greatest Mexican boxer ever.

“I still hope to see him in a fight where he looks sexy,” Berstein said of Canelo. “Because he wins and looks good, but He does not go the extra mile. “

Canelo was never able to fight hard without taking too many breaks after throwing a handful of punches.

The stamina issues we saw from Canelo earlier in his career when he was in his twenties are much worse now that he is in his thirties and campaigning in 168.

If Canelo tries the extra effort in his fights, he’ll run out of gas and be at the mercy of his opponent. But his coach/manager Eddie Rinoso carefully picked a weak opponent at 168 to help preserve his win.

Reynoso was wise enough not to push Canelo by matching him with someone who could give him problems and expose his poor stamina like David Benavidez, Germal Charlo and Artur Petribev.

You could argue that Reynoso treats the Canelo as if it were a 300,000-mile old car. When you get an old car, you can’t push it hard without it breaking down and needing repairs.

Renoso saw the bad champions breaking through the 168-pound class and then steered Canelo in that direction to take advantage of them.

Not surprisingly, Reynoso did not do so in 175 or 160. If Canelo fought in 175, he would have to deal with the assassins’ row of the following killers:

  • Artur Petbiev
  • Joe Smith Jr.
  • Dmitriy Bevol

“Golovkin fights with the lowest margins in his favour. I am not against foreign fighters, but I wanted to see him [Canelo] He raised his hand in the fair way. Berstein said.

Berstin doesn’t seem to think Canelo deserves his controversial win over Golovkin in 2018 or the questionable 12-round draw he got in his first fight of 2017.

“For example, Chavez, he’s my brother, my friend. I love him so much. He came from there to say ‘hello’ to me. For me, he’s our pride,” Berstein said.

Saul’s fights are not as exciting as Pacquiao

“Pacquiao, now he is the man who deserves to be commended all over the world for having fought and passed the baton,” Berstein said. “He had exciting fights.

Cinnamon, no.. He wins and hits people, raises his hand, earns a lot of money, But it is not convincing. [Yordenis] Ujas Mane Pacquiao was not defeated. Time beat Pacquiao. Father Time beat Mane. Berstein said.

There’s no comparison to the way Pacquiao used to fight with his all-around style compared to Canelo, who always seems to conserve his energy like someone with heart problems.

Canelo literally can’t fight in the all-out way we’re used to seeing from Pacquiao and the Mexican greats Juan Manuel Marquez, Julio Cesar Chavez and Erik Morales.

What we saw from Canelo is a fighter who lunges forward, looks to load in single shots and then rests for 20 seconds before throwing another big punch.

It would be nice if Canelo could fight like Marquez and Chavez, but he can’t do that.

The way to beat Canelo is to push at a fast pace by attacking him with continuous punches, but he hasn’t faced anyone who has done so since his second fight with Gennady Golovkin in 2018.

That fight marked the end of Canelo facing good opposition, taking secure opponents ever since.

“Good for the Cuban fighter. He is good, but in earlier times, he would not have been able to defeat Mane,” Berstein said of Ojas.

Yordenis Ugas would have had a lot of trouble if he had fought the younger Pacquiao in his twenties or thirties.

Even 42-year-old Pacquiao caused trouble for Ugas. Nobody is saying that Ugas would have defeated a younger version of Pacquiao.

Fans are going the way it is. Pacquiao is getting old and getting beaten up by a young man in Ogas, and that’s all anyone cares about.
