by Sean Jones: Canelo Alvarez will frustrate the hopes of many boxing fans by choosing his next challenger on May 7, according to reports. ESPN Knockout’s Salvador Rodriguez says Canelo’s next fight will be one”boxing purists” will not be happy.
It should come as no shock that Canelo’s next opponent would be a disappointment to boxers as he has been disappointing fans for the past four years with his lackluster opposition.
For Canelo to do anything other than disappoint would come as a shock at this point because he has become quite predictable in that area.
Some boxing fans think Canelo had mental scars From his wars with Gennady Golovkin, leaving the Mexican star unresponsive to what his fans want and detached with no emotion, staring with fish-like eyes, revealing the horror of what he went through against the Kazakhs in two wars.
It is possible that what Canelo went through in his war with GGG left him Shocked, afraid of battleNot wanting to go back to the front to be in the war zone again with other forces.
All we can say is that Canelo has been intent on taking risks since his second fight with Golovkin in 2018, and it’s easy to speculate that the competition took something out of the Mexican star, leaving what some fans see as a fighter now. Only interested in picking cherries.
Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn says Canelo and coach Eddie Renoso will meet this week to pick an opponent on May 7.
Hearn would like Canelo to walk in the direction of his bid to become the undisputed champ at age 175, but he doesn’t expect to do so.
It is believed Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) will go along with Reynoso’s plan for him to move to the Cruiserweight to challenge the WBC Champion Makabu member A fifth class title.
that it A half-baked idea that Rhinosos came up with With Canelo he’s supposed to cement his legacy, but he obviously won’t.
The way to solidify the legacy is to overcome the elite-level opposition that boxing fans of the era would like to see Canelo fight, not to clinch league titles against the paper champions, something the Mexican star has focused on since 2018.
Canelo beats PAPER Champions since 2018:
- Rocky Fielding
- Billy Joe Saunders
- Caleb Factory
- Callum Smith
- Sergey Kovalev
None of these guys were even close to an elite level, and they weren’t the fighters the boxing public wanted to see in Canelo’s face.
Kovalev was a good choice for Canelo to fight if he faced him again in 2012 when he was in his prime, knocking everyone out looking unbeatable.
Unfortunately, by the time Kanillo Kovalev fought, the Russian was 36 years old and had recently been beaten by Andre Ward x 2 and Elder Alvarez. Essentially, Kovalev was shot when Canelo picked the old Russian fighter to win the Serie A title.
Class killer Canelo chose not to fight
- Gennady Golovkin
- David Benavides
- David Morrell Jr.
- Demetrius Andrade
- Dmitriy Bevol
- Artur Petbiev
- Joe Smith Jr.
While it would be great if Canelo could rise to the weight of the cruiser to add to his legacy, 34-year-old Macabo isn’t the right choice for the Mexican star to wow fans.
Canelo’s problem is that people remembered Macabo’s third-round knockout loss to Tony Bello in 2016, and that was the last time he fought against a talented opponent. All of the Makabu’s battles since then have come against a defeatable opposition.
It will be interesting to see the backlash from boxing fans when Makabu is announced as Canelo’s next opponent. As long as Canelo is willing to shrug off the negative fan reaction, he should be fine.
