Promoter Eddie Hearn was wearing his campaign hat Thursday as he pressured Canelo Alvarez to agree to his two-fight deal to face WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Dmitri Bevol (19-0, 11 KOs) and then Gennady Golovkin in September.
These two fighters that Hearn has in his stable are attracting a lot of fan interest, and the fights will further Cnaleo’s goal of becoming the 175-pound champ.
Bivol will be a tough fight for Canelo, and he may not be up for the task. Hearn’s rival is from PBC, who is looking forward to a fight between Canelo and Jermall Charlo.
Hearn wants to fight Canelo Bevol
“I think he wants to fight better and he wants to challenge himself. The Beaful fight is a very tough fight,” Eddie Hearn told Fighthype.
“I know Canelo’s perception is that he is unbeatable and he may be, but Bivol is a tall, long range, solid, very technical fighter who can strike. He has great footwork, is unbeatable and is young and fresh.
“If you are against Canelo’s appeal, you can look at Sergey Kovalev. Yes, he was at the end of his career. Bevol is at an absolute peak.
“Joe Smith was easily defeated, and he was looking for this big opportunity. This is a very dangerous battle. Hu [Canelo] One of those people who never look for an easy way out because it doesn’t motivate him.
“Easy Payday [isn’t want Canelo wants]. He wants a challenge. So it is unique. Even Eddie, it was like, “What’s the hardest fight?” Peterbiev, I spoke to him about that fight. He loves that fight.
This is a brutal, brutal fight. He can fight anyone he wants at any time. It doesn’t need a path, but at the same time, it’s good to have a plan.
“When I sat down with him to talk to him about becoming unchallenged at age 168, we said, ‘Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Blunt. It happened within a year.
“This is the most amazing thing. To do it without a year, to beat all the champions in a year. People talk about the inactivity of the great fighters. He is a man who has gone the other way.”
“It has become a lot more active during the pandemic. The Bivol and Charlo fight are pretty much the same. I think the GGG fight is the fiercest fight out there, and it’s [Canelo] He wants the biggest fights out there.
“Bevol and Charlo too. Charlo, I personally think that Charlo’s fight is the easiest one because of the size. But at the same time, Charlo is a good fighter too,” Hearn said.
It might surprise a lot of boxing fans if Canelo chooses to fight Bivol and Golovkin in 2022. For starters, Bivol is much better than the fighters Canelo has fought since 2018.
Second, Canelo probably wouldn’t agree to a deal that would require him to fight GGG in the second fight.
People are asking about Canelo’s biography
“We’ve been working hard to try and be a part of his future,” Hearn said of Canelo. “I have a great relationship with Canelo and Eddie Reynoso.
“We’re friends but that doesn’t mean he’s going to fight us just because we’re cooperating well. He’s very selective about his career and what he’s doing.
“For Canelo, it’s all about the challenge. He has all the money in the world, and he has all the belts in the world. At that point in your career, what are you looking for? It’s not about the money but the challenges.
“If you look at what Canelo did against the champions. It’s strange that people question his resume. I had this agreement with someone recently.
“Let’s just take back his biography of Danny Jacobs, who was the world middleweight champion. That was a unification battle. Even back to the fights of Gennadiy Golovkin.
Canelo moves into two divisions to fight Sergey Kovalev, and knocks him out. Then he wants to be unchallenged at the age of 168. He beats Callum Smith, #1 in the division, Ring Magazine champion. He should have a punch against [Avni] Yildirim Him [WBC] Is mandatory. He couldn’t do anything.
He fights another champ at Billy Joe Saunders, then fights another champ at Caleb Plant to become the undisputed champion. He’s now looking at Charlo, the middleweight world champ,” Hearn said.
Canelo’s resume isn’t as solid, says Hearn. The super middleweights Canelo beat last year at the super middleweights was a regular competitor-level fighter who fell into her titles with a less-than-best win.
Canelo’s resume in the past six years:
- Caleb Factory
- Billy Joe Saunders
- Avni Yildirim
- Callum Smith
- Sergey Kovalev
- Danny Jacobs
- Gennady Golovkin
- Liam Smith
- Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Hearn can present Bivol & Golovkin
“Bevol, who is in the light heavyweight, is the undefeated world champion. Gennady Golovkin. That person [Canelo] “It’s incredible with the back-to-back battles he’s been fighting against the champions,” Hearn said.
“For my part, everyone is suggesting fights they can give, the two that I can do with DZAN are Bivol and GGG. I like the idea of Canelo trying to beat heavyweights. Joe Smith, Petbivol, Bivol.
“He could become unchallenged at 175, too,” Hearn said of Canelo. “That would be unbelievable. For me, two of the best fights are the GGG fights. So the undisputed trio at 168 is another huge fight.
“It’s really up to Canelo and Eddie. They just look at the options and go ‘We love this challenge,’ and we pray that this challenge is with us.
“Golovkin was hired to fight Morata. Do not forget that Gennady has not surrounded for more than a year.
“It’s not his fault. It’s the epidemic in Japan, but he’ll want to take that fight before he jumps again with Canelo Alvarez in my opinion. So the track will probably be Bivol and GGG,” Hearn said.
The timing of Hearn’s offer of his duo agreement for Canelo and Reynoso is not good. They seem more interested in the idea of facing Jermall Charlo, and if they can get a huge guaranteed show from PBC, it will be a detour.
Reynoso loves the 2-fight option from Hearn
“I talked deeply about it, yes,” Hearn said of him as he spoke with Canelo and Renoso about their acceptance of a two-legged fight agreement to face Pevol in May and Golovkin in September.
“I think they like it. There are two great fights. He knows that everyone in the world wants to see the GGG trilogy because it is a great fight. And he loves the idea of going up and facing other champions.
“I’m sure he likes Charlo’s fight and I’m sure he likes the other fights out there. I think that’s another fight later in the year. Hearn said of Canelo fighting WBC cruiserweight champ Ilunga Makabu.
“I think he just wants to fight the rhythm and challenge himself,” Hearn said.
It looks promising that Eddie Reynoso would love the idea of accepting Hearn’s two fight idea for Canelo to fight Pevol in May and Golovkin in September.
But we’ll have to see if Reynuso carries out the deal because Canelo can always scrap the plan if he gets cold. Even top fighters sometimes hesitate in the face of perilous opposition, and Canelo was proof of that.
